The Why and How of Observation Reports

Observation is one of the primary responsibilities of the adult in a Montessori environment. Noting expressions of the human tendencies and developmental characteristics, documenting engagement, work, social interaction, and levels of independence, responding to the emerging needs and interests of both individuals and the group—that’s what we do as educators.

Part of our responsibility is to share our observations with students and families— and to hear their observations as well.

What observations are helpful? What form should observations take? How are observations different from “assessment”?

Join us for a conversation about sharing observations of adolescents with the adolescents themselves and with the significant adults in their lives.
